ReChor

Swiss journey planner

Java · JavaFX · EPFL coursework

A desktop route planner for Swiss public transport. Instead of a single “fastest” answer, it returns every Pareto-optimal journey between two stops, trading arrival time against the number of changes, computed on the real CFF timetables.

The JavaFX interface searches stations, lists the journeys of the day and opens any of them: lines, stops, platforms, times and every change.

2.75M

connections in one weekday of the real CFF timetables, scanned in a single pass per query. About 258 MB of timetables for seven days, read from memory-mapped files.

ICoop

co-op game

Java · object-oriented design · EPFL coursework

A two-player cooperative 2D game on the course's game engine: two elemental characters, enemies, items and a final boss. Every interaction between actors goes through double dispatch (the visitor pattern), on a modular entity architecture.

Leadership

Two volunteer roles in Brussels before EPFL, where I ran events, budgets and teams.

€20,000+

raised for the Alliance Brith with its flagship sports event, which I organised as president.

~1,000

participants at that event, from the federation's five member organisations.

€200,000

budget of the Hashomer Hatzaïr summer camps I co-organised.

200

children at those camps.

Sept 2023 – June 2024

President (elected) · Alliance Brith

National federation of five youth organisations in Belgium. Elected by the five member organisations out of about ten candidates. Ran the flagship sports event, a residential seminar for about 200 participants and a national remembrance march with a public speech.

Sept 2022 – June 2024

Youth Leader · Hashomer Hatzaïr

Co-organised the movement's summer camps for 200 children, and led weekly educational and sports activities for children aged 6 to 8.

Sports

The sports that keep me balanced between exam sessions.

About me

I'm Ruben, a Belgian student from Brussels, now studying Computer Science at EPFL and curious about how technology changes the way we live, work and connect.

At school I like the parts where theory turns into something that runs: algorithms, computer systems and machine learning. I have built projects like a Swiss public transport route planner and a two-player cooperative game.

I also like bringing people together. As elected president of the Alliance Brith, a federation of five youth organizations in Belgium, I ran a sports event for about 1,000 participants. The rest of the time you'll find me on a tennis court, under water with a scuba tank, at the boxing gym or on skis, usually with a camera and a house playlist.

JavaJavaFXPareto routing

A route planner for Swiss public transport that finds and compares efficient journeys between two stations.

  • Returns several Pareto-optimal journeys instead of a single fastest one, trading off travel time against number of transfers.
  • Shows each journey in detail: lines, departure stops and platforms, times and every segment.
  • JavaFX interface with origin and destination search, a list of recommended journeys and a detail panel.

ICoop

JavaOOPGame engine

A 2D cooperative game where two players, Fire and Water, explore areas and work together up to a final boss.

  • Two simultaneous players with complementary elemental abilities.
  • Element-based interactions with enemies, walls and obstacles, collectable items such as bombs, and a final boss with ranged attacks.
  • Object-oriented design: double dispatch with a visitor, polymorphic entities and cell-based movement rules.
